The Devastated World of Refuge Inc.

Resurfaced-customdesign-Jayaheer2015-banner3

There are times when I look out over the horizon during a sunset and imagine (much like Louis from Interview with a Vampire), that it could be the last I see. Sometimes those vivid thoughts seep into my mind while I sleep, and I would wake the next morning, surprised that sun rays found their way through the tiny slits of my window blinds to illuminate my room.

Often, I find myself wondering how different life would be if I weren’t greeted with sunshine every morning and if the sun was forever positioned behind dark, heavy clouds of atmospheric toxins instead. How would it physically damage our world? How would we handle surviving after such a catastrophe, especially after witnessing other’s demise? How different would relationships be with the fear of death and guilt of survival on our mind the majority of our waking moments and in our nightmares while we slept?

I explore that scenario in Resurfaced.

And I invite you to explore the devastated world of Refuge Inc. too.

BLURB:

Tasked with a deadly mission, Damien and Patrick must return to the surface and discover healthy plant life that survived the toxic devastation that wiped out all life after a cataclysmic asteroid impact.

However, they quickly learn that it’s not just the contaminated air they should fear, but also those responsible for organizing the operation, as all things point to a deliberate suicide mission.

Finding a living plant may not only ensure a future for the thousands of subterranean survivors but may be the key they need to return to their home beneath the surface.

OPENING PAGE EXCERPT:

There’s no such thing as happy ever after, no such thing as second chances, and no such thing as coming back from where I was going.

I followed Patrick into the shaft leading to the lift, leaving our escort and life as it was behind me. The mechanical door at my back hissed before it locked for what I knew would be forever–or until the next agitator made trouble in the facility and found him or herself facing the rarely seen but much talked about dreaded door.

With every weighty footstep toward the enclosed lift, my living-breathing life became more of a shadow of a memory. It was apparent in each anxiety-induced shallow breath that escaped my lips. Although they wanted me to believe going miles above to the surface was my choice, there was no such thing as having a voice in the matter.

Up, up, up the lift took us. I glanced through my thick Plexiglas visor and across from me into Patrick’s. A single light shone from above us. The light located inside of his helmet illuminated his face, allowing me to search his eyes for a hint of fear.

“You think we’ll be surprised at the conditions up there?” Shaky and wary, his voice came through my headset.

I forced a chuckle. “I enjoy surprises.”

His nerves caused his snicker to come through rattled and apprehensive. “If my wife was still here she would’ve slapped the shit out of me for even entertaining the thought of going up.”

That was the difference between his wife and mine. Em would’ve known that I would never entertain such a thought. Just recalling her smarts and wit brought a smile to my face. If possible, I would return to previous times and relive the moments where I had gathered her and our son in my arms.

No one had to tell me I was once a lucky man, but like all good things, even luck runs out.

The lift slowed, sounding off a metallic clanking that penetrated my headset despite the noise of our hasty breaths. The sudden change in momentum knocked us off balance. Patrick’s heavily suited body and his oxygen-nutrient backpack slammed against me.

“Shit.” His oversized gloved hands gripped the sides of his helmet as he readjusted it. “They didn’t warn us about this fuck of a lift.”

“Surprise.” My lack of enthusiasm dribbled from my lips.

“See that dark color on the horizon?” Adam pointed to the east, suddenly looking somber. “That’s a wall of smoke, ash, dust and who knows what else, and it’s coming our way.”

“What? What do you mean?” A bit of panic began to stir in Elliot’s stomach like a bowl of his mother’s spicy and overly greasy chili. He’d thought the worst was over.

“Ever heard of impact winter?” Adam’s green eyes pierced his and neither moved. “What’s headed for us isn’t good. We’re gonna have to take shelter somewhere and fast before it blocks out all light and it gets so dark we won’t be able to tell which way is up. Can’t run from it either,” he added, as if predicting Elliot’s next question. “Been watching it for a couple hours now and it’s moving pretty fast.”

“What do you mean it’s going to get dark?” He knew he looked like a wide-eyed idiot, but he didn’t care much about his appearance at the moment.

“Let me put it this way. Once the sun sets we’re not gonna see it rise for quite some time. That wall of soot headed our way is so thick it will block out the sun. It will take months, maybe years, for all the crap to fall down.”

“Are you sure?” He dipped his eyebrows suspiciously. “How do you know all this?”

“When those assholes finally told us that an asteroid might hit, I went looking for info about anything to do with asteroids hitting Earth and that’s what I found out. We need to find some shelter.”

Elliot looked at the dark grey horizon. Indeed, the cloud of unnerving darkness grew bigger, wider, closer. His heart dropped, it sank in the pit of his stomach like a ton of concrete rubble. “We’re not going to make it, huh?” He gulped, suddenly feeling defeated. Panic. “What’s the point in finding shelter when we’re not gonna live to see the sun again?”

Adam grabbed his hand, gave it a gentle squeeze and let it loose before Elliot realized it had happened. The friendly squeeze hadn’t been part of his imagination. A look of sincerity and concern painted Adam’s handsome face. “I was beginning to think the same thing and then I saw you. Like I said, two heads are better than one.”

Before the Darkness: Book Progress

So I took a break from writing my post-apocalyptic, MM, Erotic romance novel Before the Darkness to spend time taking care of other responsibilities. But now I’m am ready to continue writing the novel!

I feel like I am at the halfway mark in the novel, (about 23K words) there’s still so much that needs to be written. However, I am glad to (slowly) get my ideas out of me.

My characters have veered off course a little and did some things that I didn’t expect them to do. Especially in one scene where one character’s injury prompts them to make a detour. This detour was nowhere in the original outline but I’m not gonna fight with what the characters think needs to be done.

I surprised myself but I like the story even more now due to the little detour. I can’t wait to get back to writing it!

Before the Darkness Progress

I am officially at 21,233 words written in my upcoming MM, post-apocalyptic erotic romance story, Before the Darkness. This story revolves around two survivors of an asteroid impact who are forced to confront their pasts in order to appreciate their second chance at life and possibly make for a better future.

Currently, I’m at a critical point in the story, (or the most critical) the climax. Which is good! That means I’m almost to the end.

The problem?

Well, I’m not quite sure where I want this story to end. The initial ending I had planned for it might end at 30k words. However, another possible ending wouldn’t be met until about 50k words.

If I go with the initial ending, readers might want an extension. Which will result in a series that I’m not sure I’m ready to commit to. There’s other stories I want to complete too.

If I go with the other ending, it may take longer than I want it to, it would require tons to rewrite and edit, and I’m not sure I’m ready for that either. Not to mention the climax I’m about to write will probably be just one of the big incidences that move the story forward to the “real” climax.

When I outlined and started writing Before the Darkness, I had it all set in my head; the beginning, middle and end. Now, the story’s kinda taking on a life of its own (including the characters) and I’m a bit afraid of where it might lead me.

I’m not good with unpredictable. I like to have a plan and stick to it. Anyway, we shall see where this takes me. Who knows, maybe it will turn out to be better than I imagined if I just tell the story that wants to be told, instead of limiting the story by keeping it confined to my outline.

Before the Darkness Progress

Currently, I am at 12,500 words in my latest WIP, Before the Darkness. The way the story is going I expect to finish it somewhere around 20k-30k words, although it can be longer. I can’t seem to find the time to work on it as much as I want to. I hope this weekend I can write a big chunk of it because I want to finish it before the end of the year.

The elevator pitch:

After an asteroid strikes Earth, sending a wall of ash and other debris into the atmosphere, Elliot meets fellow survivor Adam and together they take advantage of the next few hours, learning to appreciate their second chance at life and live it to the fullest.

The problem:

The research.  Asteroids are tricky to write about, especially an asteroid impact with Earth. Even though the story focuses more on the inner conflict of the main characters, the impact is what sets the story in motion and contributes to the story’s tension, adding suspense, raising the stakes and providing exterior conflict. Therefore, it’s very important that the impact and the effects of impact are realistic.

I hope to finish the first draft before the end of the year. Hell, some writers can do it in thirty days. That would be nice!
