In Honor of International Day Against Homophobia

Hop Against Homophobia is an attempt by over 250 MM authors, reviewers and publishers to stand together and create awareness of homophobia. Below is a personal story I’d like to share to honor this day.

As a young girl, I had always looked down upon discriminating against someone for being something they couldn’t control, like: black, female, handicapped or gay. Discrimination had always been something I stood against. I think it had something to do with me being an African American female, and understanding the bumpy road we travelled through America’s history to present day.

I raised my two girls to respect people for who they are and to only judge how people treat others including my girls themselves.

So, you can imagine the shock and horror I experienced when my teenager told me she thought gays were “creepy.” This attitude came about from an entry she discovered in her best friend’s diary. Her friend apparently wrote about a crush she had on my daughter and it freaked her out.

This led to a lengthy argument conversation about homosexuality. My concerns were that she would lose a good friend over a secret she shouldn’t have even known. She admits her friend hadn’t tried anything inappropriate, her friend had never acted differently or weird around her, but finding out the secret was enough to keep my daughter from wanting to be around her friend anymore.

It saddened me. It was an insignificant reason to lose a friend over, I thought.

However, after talking with my daughter some more, I’ve come to realize how young and innocent her mind really is. She’s just afraid of what she doesn’t understand. No one can tell her what to think or how to feel. Besides, it took a few days for her initial shock to wear off and now her and her friend are the best friends they always were. Hopefully, with time and experience she will grow up to be the more tolerant, understanding, and compassionate woman I’m raising her to be.

Maybe she will grow to be against discriminating someone for being something they can’t control. Especially when the only thing they have a hard time controlling is who they love.

In Honor of International Day Against Homophobia, I am giving away one free PDF copy of my latest MM & MMF erotic read, Tongue Tied, to one lucky commenter.

Tongue Tied
Ever since that little finger licking slipup during their “double dating” session, Dorian’s tongue has been on Ryan’s mind. If only Ryan had the courage to tell his friend what’s been nagging at him. Maybe Dorian could help him verbalize what he so desperately wants. Maybe Dorian will give him even more than he asks for.

All you have to do to enter for a chance to win is leave a comment on this post with your email, and a winner will be randomly chosen. The winner will be notified via email on May 20th when the contest ends. Entrants must be 18 years or older.

There are over 250 other sites participating in Hop Against Homophobia 2012, so be sure to check them out here: http://hopagainsthomophobia.blogspot.com.
